Synology® Unveils DiskStation Manager 3.1

Advanced NAS Server OS brings versatile features and is available for free download

Taipei, Taiwan—January 20, 2011—Synology® Inc. today announced the beginning of DiskStation Manager 3.1 (DSM 3.1) beta program. This new NAS server OS brings a collection of new features that boost:

  • Management efficiency with multiple volumes on a single RAID, sharing of print/fax/scan on multifunction printers, and enhanced Synology File Browser
  • Data availability with shared folder synchronization and dual disks redundancy
  • Mobile devices enrichment with AirPrint® support and native apps for iPad®
  • Multimedia enjoyment with advanced Download, Audio, and Photo Station
  • Surveillance solution with smart search and video analysis in Surveillance Station

“We recognize the ever increasing volume of digital assets is challenging enterprises. IT managers are struggling to feed the expanding capacity and manage enormous storage pools,” said Rosiel Lee, product manager of Synology Inc. “The new Storage Manager precludes the challenges with the flexibility of creating multiple volumes on a single RAID. IT managers can now expand volume size dynamically and set a shared folder’s quota by leveraging this unique technology.”

DSM 3.1 evaluates the efficiency of various operations. Synology DiskStation is the very first to support the sharing of print, fax and scan on a multifunction printer. Multiple administrators can now log on the same Synology DiskStation. In addition, File Browser supports preview of photos, videos, PDF, and Office documents, along with various searching criteria, making searches more precise and quickly. Getting the results has become timelier by performing database index to file names.

Enterprises call for data availability and reliability. The DSM 3.1 provides a workaround by allowing users to schedule synchronization of specific shared folders from one Synology DiskStation to another, providing an immediate recovery solution and allowing documents to be shared seamlessly. In addition, the Synology Hybrid RAID technology now supports two disks fault tolerance. Furthermore, users can choose multiple destinations in network backup for stacked layers of protection while the Windows ACL support allows data to be restored along with its complex access permission settings.

Synology is gearing up to meet the ever increasing demand for mobile device support. The industry’s first AirPrint support allows users wirelessly print documents from iPhone and iPad to any AirPrint-enabled printer connected to DiskStation. Additionally, the iPad-native DS photo+ and DS audio applications are now available. Their tailor-made UIs bring intuitive hands-on experience. By shaking iPad gently, the playing song will immediately jump to the next. Furthermore, the new DS file application allows the users of iPhone download and upload documents from and to Synology NAS server.

The DSM 3.1 extends users’ multimedia experience by offering several overhauled applications. The Download Station automates every process, from searching downloadable files on the Internet to aggregating the latest available torrent through the RSS feeds. The Audio Station 3 features an equalizer to facilitate hearing sensation, a mini player to contribute to multitasking, personal playlists and editable ID3 Tags. The Personalized Photo Station allows every account user to host his or her own photo album and blog. Users can easily share the link of a photo album on facebook, twitter, and PlurkTM.

Surveillance Station 5 now runs on Internet Explorer®, Firefox®, and Chrome®, and allows users to detect any motions, missing and foreign objects, camera occlusion and focus lost, and adjust image quality for detailed viewing. The Mail Station 2 supports multiple email domain fetching and multiple SMTP servers to offer centralized management of all emails and protect users’ privacy. Additionally, selected Synology DiskStations are VMware® vSphere™ and Citrix® XenServer™ certified, and compatible with Microsoft Hyper-V™, providing a seamless storage solution for virtualization servers.

Synology® Updates the OS of USB Station 2 to Support Print/Fax/Scan Sharing on Multifunction Printers

Synology® Updates the OS of USB Station 2 to Support Print/Fax/Scan Sharing on Multifunction Printers

Taipei, Taiwan—December 27, 2010—Synology® Inc. today announced the latest operating system update for Synology USB Station 2 NAS server, supporting the sharing of print, fax and scan on a multifunction printer to other computers over the same network. Shared printing is already in wide use whereas scanning and faxing are not due to the lack of standardized protocol. Additional expense for a costly multifunction printer server is usually required to share these two features over a network. This operating system update enables complete sharing on a multifunction printer, increases efficiency for a home or office workgroup, and minimizes operational expenses for peripheral device.

“The new update makes Synology the very first to have support in scan and fax sharing on a NAS server. This particular feature utilizes a technology known as ‘USB over TCP/IP,’ in which it allows a USB device on a host machine to be shared to other clients over a network. On our USB Station 2, the sharing of multifunction printer on different platforms has been easier than ever,” said Chad Jiang, the product manager of Synology Inc.

Small offices and households are now offered an alternative solution to costly multifunction printer server or a printer with built-in sharing capability; aside from the new sharing features, there are still many more, such as plug-and-play file sharing, multimedia content streaming, PC-less downloading, and low power consumption – all in a single NAS server.

Synology® Inc. today launched DiskStation DS110+ and DS210+, high-performance and secure NAS servers for SMB users to share and backup data efficiently and increase productivity with rich business-oriental features.

The Synology DS110+ and DS210+ are ideal for users who require a reliable data storage solution and demand high-performance speed for file sharing. The performance test conducted by Synology’s lab showed that in a Windows® environment, the Synology DS110+ serves an average of 108+ MB/sec reading speed and 68+ MB/sec writing speed while the Synology DS210+ delivers 108+ MB/sec reading and 58+ MB/sec writing. The web server responsiveness is impressive, too. The Synology DS110+ and DS210+ take 85.08 and 78.14 seconds respectively to handle 1,000 simultaneous requests.

“The Synology DS110+ and DS210+ provide users with secure network attached solution that protects data confidentiality while keeps performance high,” said Rosiel Lee, product manager of Synology Inc. The Synology DS110+ and DS210+ are equipped with 256-bit AES hardware encryption engines that can offload the security encryption tasks away from the main CPUs, helping to improve file transfer speeds of the DiskStations. The Synology testing lab shows that the hardware encryption engine boasts reading speed that is about 200% faster than a pure software encryption.

The Synology DS110+ calls for just 21 watts of power under normal operation while the DS210+ consumes 30 watts. Features like Wake on LAN/WAN, scheduled power on/off and hard drive hibernation further help to reduce not only carbon footprint but also operation costs. “The Synology DS110+ and DS210+ follow our commitment of delivering products with minimal environmental impact,” added Lee. Both Synology DS110+ and DS210+ are equipped with a 1.06 GHz CPU with floating point computing, 64 bit memory bus, 512MB RAM, 1 Gigabit LAN port, 3 USB ports and 1 eSATA port.

With limited resources and manpower, SMB encounters difficulty in managing multiple pieces of network hardware. Running on the award-winning system software, Synology DiskStation Manager 2.3 (DSM 2.3), the Synology DiskStation DS110+ and DS210+ can cost-effectively replace other devices and even PC servers on the network. Web Station allows the hosting of up to 30 websites on a single Synology DS110+ or DS210+. Mail Station add-on turns a Synology DS110+ or DS210+ into a mail server. Surveillance Station 4 enables SMB users to safeguard their properties with a centralized interface by deploying IP cameras. File Station 3 and encrypted FTP server simplify Internet access. HTTPS, firewall, and IP auto-block support ensure file sharing over the Internet is protected at a high security level.

The DSM 2.3 includes new features such as easy RAID and volume management with Synology Hybrid RAID (SHR), backup to the cloud with Amazon S3®, EZ-Internet wizard that walks users through all the complex settings like port forwarding and DDNS, and video surveillance with iPhone® DS cam, making the using experience of the Synology DS110+ and DS210+ just got better.
