SCM MICROSYSTEMS SHIPS SMART CARD READERS TO SUPPORT SPANISH GOVERNMENT eID PROGRAM
SANTA ANA, California and ISMANING, Germany, October 20, 2009. SCM Microsystems, Inc. (NASDAQ: SCMM, Prime Standard: SMY), a leading provider of solutions for secure access, secure identity and secure exchange, announced that it has shipped more than 200,000 smart card readers to support a Spanish eGovernment and eID project.
SCM’s SCR3310v2.0 smart card readers will be used to enable various eGovernment applications under an electronic ID Card (DNI electrónico) project in Spain. Individuals and businesses will be able to use the reader to access eGovernment, eBanking and eAdministration applications, as well as to digitally sign documents.
SCM Microsystems received the order from red.es – an entity within the Spanish Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Trade responsible for driving the Information Society in Spain and for carrying out strategic projects – via its partner Algoritmos Procesos y Diseños, S.A. (APD). The Spanish government is providing the readers to its citizens at no charge, to drive the distribution and use of the electronic ID card and the respective technologies in Spain. Several Spanish business sponsors are supporting the government project.
